Who is this programme for?

People whose responsibilities include an initial response to cardiac or respiratory emergencies, subject to the selected programme’s audience.

What will you learn?

Understand the purpose of resuscitation training and the supervised skills needed for an effective initial emergency response.

  • Recognition of life-threatening emergencies and emergency communication.
  • Supervised resuscitation skills and awareness of AED equipment where included.
  • Scenario practice, teamwork and the limits of the responder’s role.

Why do resuscitation courses use supervised practice?

Resuscitation training involves coordinated physical skills and communication. Reading concepts is different from demonstrating them in a training scenario. Supervised practice lets an instructor observe performance, provide feedback and relate individual actions to the wider response team.

The exact skills and patient groups depend on the named course. This is why a learner should choose a programme matching their responsibilities and complete its practical assessment rather than treating all CPR and life-support titles as the same training.

How is the published knowledge assessment structured?

The OSHAS programme page describes an open-book knowledge assessment with 3 hours allowed and a minimum pass score of 65%. These are the rules for this programme, not a universal pass mark for every OSHAS course. Practical duties also require competence appropriate to the work.

Is any BLS or CPR certificate accepted by every employer?

Employers may specify the issuing organisation and exact course title. A programme from one organisation should not be assumed equivalent to SHA or another resuscitation body. Choose the training that matches your role and the certificate requested, with practical skills assessment appropriate to the course.
