Who is this programme for?

Entrants, attendants, supervisors and safety personnel involved in work around tanks, vessels, pits or other confined spaces.

What will you learn?

Understand why confined-space work needs specific planning, clearly assigned roles and effective emergency arrangements.

  • Recognising confined spaces and atmospheric, physical or engulfment hazards.
  • Roles, permits, isolation, communication and the purpose of atmospheric testing.
  • Emergency planning and the distinction between awareness, entry and rescue competence.

How do entry roles work together?

Confined-space work depends on coordination between the people planning the task, those entering, attendants and any specialist support. Their responsibilities need to remain clear when work conditions or personnel change. Communication is part of the control system rather than an informal extra.

Learning about these interfaces helps people understand why permits, isolation, atmospheric information and emergency arrangements are considered together. The appropriate practical training then depends on whether the learner is an entrant, attendant, supervisor or specialist responder.

How is the published knowledge assessment structured?

The OSHAS programme page describes an open-book knowledge assessment with 2 hours allowed and a minimum pass score of 65%. These are the rules for this programme, not a universal pass mark for every OSHAS course. Practical duties also require competence appropriate to the work.

Does awareness training authorise confined-space entry?

Entry requires a safe system of work and people competent for their assigned tasks. An awareness course does not by itself authorise entry, gas testing or rescue. Matching training to your role helps ensure the right practical skills and site procedures are covered.
