Who is this programme for?

Drivers and supervisors responsible for work-related journeys, fleet activities or vehicle movements in operating environments.

What will you learn?

Develop a more anticipatory approach to driving, recognising risk before a road or workplace transport situation becomes an incident.

  • Recognising traffic hazards and anticipating other road users’ actions.
  • Driver fitness, fatigue, distraction and the effect of journey conditions.
  • Vehicle checks, space management and reviewing incidents to improve driving behaviour.

How does journey planning affect driving risk?

Driving risk is affected by more than vehicle handling. Work schedules, fatigue, route conditions and pressure to arrive can influence the decisions a driver makes. Defensive-driving learning helps people recognise these influences and discuss concerns before a journey becomes a problem.

For an organisation, improvement can involve both driver behaviour and the way journeys are arranged. This gives supervisors and drivers a shared basis for reviewing incidents and identifying practical changes to work-related travel.

How is the published knowledge assessment structured?

The OSHAS programme page describes an open-book knowledge assessment with 2 hours allowed and a minimum pass score of 70%. These are the rules for this programme, not a universal pass mark for every OSHAS course. Practical duties also require competence appropriate to the work.

Is defensive driving a replacement for a driving licence?

The course develops risk awareness and driving judgement. It does not replace a licence or authorise operation of a different vehicle class. Work-related driving also depends on suitable vehicles, sensible journey planning and employer procedures, not just the individual driver’s decisions.
