Who is this programme for?

Nominated fire wardens, floor representatives and supervisors supporting evacuation and routine fire safety checks.

What will you learn?

Understand the fire warden’s part in prevention, evacuation and communication during workplace emergencies.

  • The warden’s responsibilities before an emergency and within the evacuation plan.
  • Recognising blocked escape routes, poor housekeeping and defects to report.
  • Communication, assembly arrangements and learning from evacuation drills.

How can a warden make evacuation drills more useful?

A drill provides a chance to observe how people understand the plan, respond to alarms and communicate at assembly arrangements. A warden can help identify confusion or practical obstacles so the organisation can improve its procedures.

The value is in the review as well as participation. Clear observations about access, communication and assigned responsibilities help turn a routine exercise into better preparedness, while the formal emergency plan determines the actions expected of each person.

How is the published knowledge assessment structured?

The OSHAS programme page describes an open-book knowledge assessment with 2 hours allowed and a minimum pass score of 65%. These are the rules for this programme, not a universal pass mark for every OSHAS course. Practical duties also require competence appropriate to the work.

What is the difference between a fire warden and a fire watcher?

A fire warden supports building fire safety and evacuation arrangements. A fire watcher normally observes a particular hot-work activity and its surrounding area. The roles share fire awareness but have different responsibilities and should be assigned according to the actual emergency and work-control plans.
