Who is this assessor award for?
The award is relevant to trainers, instructors and learning practitioners assessing vocational skills, knowledge and understanding. It covers contexts such as workshops, classrooms and training environments, with evidence drawn from assessment activity.
It develops both your reasoning as an assessor and your ability to carry out assessments. Knowing the theory alone is not the same as demonstrating the practical unit.
Two mandatory units: principles and applied assessment
The award has 10 credits and 100 hours of total qualification time. The two units connect assessment principles with evidence of your own practice.

What coursework and practical evidence are required?
For the principles unit, the June 2025 specification indicates approximately 3,500 words of coursework. The practical unit combines a reflective account, observation of performance, work products and witness or written feedback; the specification indicates approximately 3,000 words for its written component.
These are indicative workloads, not a complete assignment brief. Your centre sets the actual tasks and evidence arrangements. The written account needs to be supported by credible assessment practice, rather than replacing observation or work products.
How do you pass the award?
Each unit is graded Pass / Fail. The centre assesses your work and OTHM externally verifies achievement. You must demonstrate every learning outcome and assessment criterion; there is no single final percentage score covering both units.
The assessor needs a clear trail from your evidence to the criteria. Organising assessment plans, decisions, feedback and records will help demonstrate that your practice is consistent and defensible.
Entry, language and access to assessment practice
There are no formal entry qualifications. You need the capability to work at the required level and sufficient English for assessment. Learners from countries where English is not the majority language need evidence of English competence.
Before registration, establish how you will access suitable vocational assessment activities. The practical unit requires you to carry out assessment, so a purely theoretical study plan would not provide the complete evidence.
Assessor qualification or internal quality assurance?
Assessors judge an individual learner’s achievement. Internal quality assurers review the consistency and quality of assessment across assessors. This award supports the first role and can lead towards the Level 4 IQA Award when your responsibilities and practice opportunities are suitable.
It does not by itself provide a general teaching licence or replace the subject knowledge needed to assess a specialist trade.
