Who is the Environmental and Sustainability Management Diploma for?
The diploma is relevant to environmental, sustainability and HSE professionals, managers and graduates moving towards strategic responsibilities. It develops the language and analytical skills to connect environmental pressures with business decisions, policy and organisational change.
The mandatory units establish a shared foundation; your two options let you develop a more specific interest. It can support management and consultancy development without assuming that all learners need the same professional specialism.
Four mandatory units
The diploma requires six units: the four mandatory units below plus two of the five options. Each unit is worth 20 credits, 100 guided hours and 200 total hours.

What assignments and research work are included?
The first three mandatory units each indicate approximately 4,500 words of coursework. Research Methods uses a research proposal of approximately 2,500 words. These different tasks reflect the purpose of the units: evaluating environmental issues and management choices, and designing a justified enquiry.
Optional-unit workload also varies. The specification gives the following indicative examples; the centre’s current assignment briefs provide the exact instructions.
- Transformational Change: a 3,000-word essay plus a presentation with approximately 800 words of speaker notes.
- Net Zero: coursework tasks of approximately 2,500 and 2,000 words.
- Environmental Politics and Policies: coursework tasks of approximately 2,500 and 2,000 words.
- Sustainable Finance and Sustainability as a Business Strategy: approximately 4,500 words of coursework for each selected unit.
How is achievement judged?
All six selected units must be passed. The centre assesses and internally quality assures the work, and OTHM externally verifies achievement. A Pass requires evidence meeting every learning outcome and assessment criterion for the unit.
This is a coursework-based Pass / Fail qualification. Word counts indicate workload, not automatic marks for writing more. Clear analysis, relevant evidence and a justified conclusion matter when demonstrating the required outcomes.
Entry requirements and English
The programme is designed for learners typically aged 21 or above. The entry profile includes a relevant Level 6 qualification, normally an honours degree or equivalent, or relevant professional experience of at least three years considered by the centre.
Assessment is in English. Learners from countries where English is not the majority language need evidence of English competence. Your qualifications or experience should be checked before registration.
Study time, specialisation and progression
The specification describes a one-year programme. TQT includes guided learning and the independent reading, analysis and assessment needed to achieve it; the 600 guided hours are included within the 1,200-hour total.
A Level 7 diploma is at master’s level on the RQF, but this 120-credit award is not a full master’s degree. University top-up admission and any further dissertation requirements depend on the institution. Choose options that support the kind of environmental or sustainability work you want to develop.
