Who is the IOSH Level 6 Diploma for?
It is aimed at current and aspiring OSH professionals preparing for leadership and management responsibilities. No specific entry qualification is mandatory, but Level 3 knowledge or equivalent experience is recommended. IOSH membership is required before starting.
For learners whose first language is not English, IOSH recommends proficiency equivalent to IELTS 7. Study generally takes 18–24 months, depending on the centre and learning route.
Three units focused on professional practice
The qualification connects technical knowledge with how organisations make decisions and how people respond to change.
- Advanced OSH management principles in organisations — legal frameworks, risk management and incident-management approaches.
- OSH integration within an organisation — connect OSH with organisational systems, priorities and performance.
- Leading and influencing in OSH — develop leadership, challenge practices constructively and reflect on professional capability.
Are there written examinations?
There are no written exams. Each unit uses an assignment based on organisational practice. Unit 1 requires a self-critique of a safety management system. Units 2 and 3 involve an OSH strategic proposal and presentation with assessor questioning; Unit 3 also includes a reflective statement.
If you are not currently working, you can use an organisation you know well or can access sufficiently to complete the tasks.
How does it relate to IOSH membership?
The diploma can meet the academic requirement for Certified membership. Membership progression still depends on the applicable experience and application requirements. The learning supports professional judgement and organisational influence rather than awarding a job title automatically.
