Who should take IOSH Managing Safely?

Managing Safely is for managers and supervisors in any sector. You do not need previous safety qualifications. The course helps you recognise your responsibilities, understand everyday risks and organise sensible controls alongside your normal management duties.

What will you learn?

The full course normally takes three days. Learning links risk assessment with decisions managers make about people, equipment and work activities.

  • Assessing risks and selecting proportionate controls.
  • Understanding management responsibilities and common workplace hazards.
  • Investigating incidents to understand causes and prevent recurrence.
  • Measuring safety performance and using findings to improve arrangements.

How does it help a supervisor in practice?

It gives you a shared way to discuss risk, question unsafe arrangements and follow up actions with your team. For example, a supervisor can use the learning to distinguish a hazard from its risk and explain why a proposed control should reduce exposure.

Managing Safely is a management-awareness course. A professional qualification such as the IOSH Diploma involves a substantially deeper programme and different assessment demands.

Does the Managing Safely certificate expire?

The IOSH certificate does not have an expiry date. IOSH recommends refresher training to keep knowledge current, and offers a one-day Managing Safely Refresher. Employers may still set their own requirements for recent training.
